ABOUT OUR COURSE

A day all about beekeeping, to get you started we want you to discover all you need to know about safe and successful beekeeping on this one-day course at Beekos. You’ll gain a full understanding of the whole process before you commit to keeping bees yourself. With a combination of hands-on experience and guidance this beekeeping course will give you the confidence and skills to establish your own beehive.  

 

Not forgetting when and how to extract that lovely golden honey.

 

Your morning will be spent at Beekos, learning some essential theory explaining about the honeybees, helping you choose your hives and equipment’s, how and where to set up your apiary, the bees management, pests and diseases. 

 

For the afternoon practical session, putting your protective suit on and gaining that experience with our bees you will learn in more detail how to inspect and safely handle the bees. with guidance and ethical discussions on how often you should open your hives, feeding bees and protecting your colony from disease, weather and more. 

 

The day will end with further theory lessons and the chance to enjoy some tasty honey treats.

COURSE STRUCTURE

MORNING - THEORY

Learning about the Honeybee. What’s in the colony, biology, and their life cycle.

  1. Different types of Hives, equipment tools and personal protection

  2. The Apiary and layout, positioning the hives, responsibilities, and safety

  3. Summer and winter jobs

  4. Bee Health and Diseases, pests & other problems 

 

AFTERNOON - PRACTICAL  

  1. How to open a beehive for the first time.

  2. Inspecting the hive and handling the frames 

  3. Spotting the queen 

  4. Recognising a problem and how to fix it

  5. Swarm control 

  6. Honey Harvest 

  7. Spring and Winter Preparation.

HOW TO PREPARE

Please bring the following along with you on the day of your course.

 

- Bring gloves (washing-up type gloves are fine) and wellies/boots for the visit to the apiary.

 

- A notebook to write answers to any questions you may have.

OTHER INFORMATION

- A bee-suit will be provided. 

 

- Please arrive 15 mins before the start of the course for a prompt start.
